Delegates at the EMBA’s annual meeting have approved their Board’s decision to call Revd David Rogers as the new regional minister (north) to the association. Almost two hundred people gathered from 59 churches across the region, both figures were significantly up on last year’s gathering.
This was the final Association meeting for the Revd Anthony Walker in his role as moderator of the board of directors. For the past seven years he has led fellow directors through what has been a considerable period of change ‘never failing to bring his pastoral heart to all situations’ according to one former director. Anthony and his wife Doreen received tokens of thanks from delegates. It was also the final association meeting for Revd Steve Mantle, team leader regional minister, who will leave his position at the end of June to commence working with the Shine Foundation in Africa. Steve has carried an immense workload over the past three years and has given unselfishly of his time and talents There are exciting things happening across the region. The Association presented certificates of achievement to newly qualified parish nurses Mandy Smith (Burgh le Marsh BC, Lincolnshire) and Vera Harding (Cross Hills BC, Bagworth) who told delegates about their work and hopes. Revd Bruce Nadin spoke about his imminent departure with his family on mission work in South Africa to work with Ambassadors in Sport. The new, and what is probably unique amongst all associations, thirteen member Safeguarding Advisory Group was introduced to delegates. Not only will they be discussing the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults but they will be actively engaged in delivering help, training and support across the region, significantly strengthening the protection of the vulnerable. Howard Smedley will be working as advisor with the group as well as developing his protection consultancy work internationally. In a time of open sharing Ian Drummond (Derbyshire Mission Facilitator) spoke of the many and varied activites taking place across the county. He was followed by contributions from Revd Anthony Thacker (Hinckley BC), detached evangelist Gert Glasius (Lectio Divina ministry) and Lynne Alderson from Desford Free Church. All were equally excited about the mission opportunities they were engaged with and confident that God was at work in each situation drawing people to Himself. But perhaps the most exciting story of the day was the work of Greenhill Community Church, Coalville, which this year is the Association’s Church Project. Funds will be collected from across the region to support Greenhill’s work amongst ‘bench folk’, people from the local council estate who are sleeping rough and have found shelter, quite literally, in the arms of the church. The church has acquired a property to house some of the men and build their self-esteem. Rev Jill Willett spoke with passion and joy about seeing men come off the street and, after a period of time, come to Christ in their prayer meetings. Watch this space!
